Standard 3: Planning and Implementation
Physical education teacher candidates plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with local state, and national standards to address the diverse needs of all students.
Element 3.1: Design and implement short and long-term plans that are linked to program and instructional goals as well as a variety of student needs
Artifact: EDU 255 Scope and Sequence
Reflection:
During my EDU 255 course, one other classmate and I created a scope and sequence of a golf-putting unit. It has a progressive approach that would build student’s skill level from kindergarten up until 12th grade.
A scope and sequence was made for a school district to have PE teachers work together building to building. The creation of these must be made as a group in collaboration between the schools and with the support of the administrators. This is important because without a scope and sequence, time is wasted due to re-teaching what has already been taught. Without each grade moving forward, teaching is severely compromised. This represents my progress in meeting the standard by showing that I have the ability to create a plan that starts at the lower levels and works towards a more educated student.
Element 3.5: Plan and adapt instruction for diverse student needs, adding specific accommodations and/or modifications
Artifact: Top-Down Plan
Reflection:
I created a top-down plan in PED 356 Adapted PE and Sports for a student with a disability. This plan describes where I believe the student should be in 5,10, and 15 years. Also, this plan includes different physical activities I believe the student would be able to participate in.
I believe that the student I wrote the plan for would have graduated high school, taking a couple online courses developing her communication skills, actively involved in a recreational dance and holding a part time job at a bowling alley where she can also practice her skills. I also included in the plan non-competitive life long skills the student would be able to participate in all the way up until she is 30 and participating in the Special Olympics (for bowling) and as a ballroom dance assistant. These predictions are important to make so you and the student you are working with are moving towards during the time you have together. This represents my progress in meeting the standard because it shows I believe the student to be able to do in the future, which is important so you have something to set goals towards.
Planning and adapting instruction for diverse students needs, adding specific accommodations and/or modifications is important for a physical educator because you will have a wide range of students that are placed in your class. Educators have to be ready to accommodate students with extra needs.
