NASPE Standard 2: Skill and Fitness Based Competance
Physical education teacher candidates are physically educated individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health enhancing fitness delineated in the NASPE K-12 Standards.
Element 2.2: Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of fitness throughout the program
Artifact: Personal physical fitness log
Reflection:
This physical fitness workout is template that I created and reuse when I work out. In creating and using this artifact, I not only become more physically active and physical fit, but I set an example for others about the personal responsibility of keeping one’s self physically fit. This represents my progress in meeting the standard because it is an example of what I do in my personal time, which is what I would want my future students to do.
This is important for a teacher because it is a major part of what a physical educator will be teaching students. Teaching students how to design personal fitness programs to improve cardio respiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, endurance, and body composition is incorporated in NYS learning standard 1.
Element 2.3: Demonstrate performance concepts related to skillful movement in a variety of physical activities
Artifact: Volleyball Skills Test
Reflection:
This artifact is an assessment of different skills that make up the sport of volleyball. This artifact represents my progress in meeting the standard by showing that I am competent in the major skills of volleyball. This is important because a good teacher has to understand and be able to demonstrate what they teach. Assessing skills as a physical educator in my mind is one of the most important things that a teacher can do. I believe this is important because it validates physical education as a whole. It shows students what they need to work on, and most importantly shows students their strengths and weaknesses in a skill.
